Senior IceCats Kyle Junkunc, Payton Schweiger and Junior Carson Darnall have been selected to represent the IceCats in the IHSHL North Central (Champions) Division All-Star game to be held on January 5, 2018 at West Meadows Ice Arena.
This is the second year in a row that Junkunc was selected. The Senior Captain is the team leader in goals (18) and points (29) and is tied with Schweiger for second on the team in assists (11). A center, Junkunc is also a key face off member for the IceCats, and he is a solid defensive forward, as proven with his team leading 28 blocked shots. Junkunc scores many highlight reel goals and seems to raise his game against toughest opponents and at critical times in the game. He leads the team with 5 game winning goals.
After missing most of his Junior season, recovering from major knee surgery, Schweiger has been the comeback player of the year for the IceCats. The 3-year varsity player is tied for 2nd on the team in assists (11) and he is 5th on the team in points (13), which is very impressive for a defenseman. Schweiger is a key member of one of the best High School Hockey defense corps in the state. He plays significant minutes on the Power Play and the Penalty Kill. Schweiger’s long reach and big body causes nightmares for opponents around the IceCat’s net.
Junior defenseman and Assistant Captain Carson Darnall’s combination of skill, speed, and physicality has resulted in many game changing plays. The most memorable was a game winning shootout goal against Barrington, one of the top teams in the state. Darnall leads the IceCats with 15 assists, a remarkable achievement because he plays defense. Darnall skates like he is shot out of cannon and is a human missile body checker, leading the team with 52 hits. The 3-year varsity player has changed games with his body checks as much as his assists and goals.
Come out to the game and support Junkunc, Schweiger and Darnall as they proudly represent the IceCats. Puck drop is at 7:50!
